Overview

The Antonov An-225 Mriya is the world's largest aircraft by length and cargo hold volume, designed as a strategic heavy-lift cargo aircraft rather than a conventional airliner. Built in Ukraine, this massive transport was developed to carry the Buran space shuttle and other oversized payloads. The aircraft features a distinctive double-deck fuselage, with a main cargo deck capable of accommodating up to 250 tons of freight. Powered by six turbofan engines, the An-225 dominated the international heavy-lift cargo market for decades. While technically capable of passenger transport, it has rarely been configured for airline use. The original prototype was destroyed in 2022 during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. A second aircraft completed in 1991 remains the only operational An-225 and serves under Antonov Airlines for specialized cargo operations, transporting oversized industrial equipment, humanitarian aid, and emergency relief supplies globally. Its unique capabilities make it irreplaceable for certain missions, though its operational cost is extraordinary.
